Frost is a lea­ding cau­se of de­te­ri­o­ra­ti­on at the ar­chaeo­lo­gi­cal site in Aven­ches, Swit­zer­lan­d. This is espe­ci­al­ly true for ar­chi­tec­tu­ral blocs made of grès co­quil­lier, a sand­s­to­ne con­tai­ning shells, but is also true for non­-­ce­men­tous re­sto­ra­ti­on mor­tar­s.

Du­ring an ap­p­lied re­sea­rch pro­jec­t, a frost­-­re­si­stant li­me­-­ba­sed re­sto­ra­ti­on mor­tar was de­ve­lo­pe­d. The can­di­da­te mor­tar was then ap­p­lied du­ring an in­ter­ven­ti­on at the Ro­man the­a­tre.
