Fungus infestation on Roman architecture

Project Description

The Fontain House is a Roman underground structure in Augst, Switzerland. A humid temperate climate had persisted within the interior. After a number of years a fungus infestation had become evident. A brown ozonium spread over an area of several square meters and small fruit bodies began to appear on a regular basis.

With the help of an expert, the fungus could be identified. Wood used during prior conservation work was determined to be the source of the problem. The wood was thus removed and the organic debris was reduced from the surface mechanically.
