Structural grouting of Roman masonry

Project Description

An important share of Roman walls are built in the technique of vertically-layered masonry. The outside wall elements are made of tailored stone work and the inside is filled with rubble and some binder. This is the case for the amphitheatre of AUGUSTA RAURICA. A common problem for this building technique is the detachment of the outside walls due to structural movements and water intrusion. If these walls are not stabilized in time, they can fail all together.

During an intervention the joint-work was thoroughly repaired and a grout - based on fine quartz-sand, lime, and highly reactive metakaolin - was injected in the voids. The work was part of a training and cooperation effort with the workers of the site.
