Frost is a leading cause of deterioration at the archaeological site in Avenches, Switzerland. This is especially true for architectural blocs made of grès coquillier, a sandstone containing shells, but is also true for non-cementous restoration mortars.
During an applied research project, a frost-resistant lime-based restoration mortar was developed. The candidate mortar was then applied during an intervention at the Roman theatre.
